Sambar is a favorite at home and I often make Sambar with idlis or steamed rice. I specially buy pearl onions to make this onion sambar and Ulli theeyal (Kerala curry made with pearl onions). Tamil Nadu Style Vengaya Sambar is a comforting onion sambar recipe which is a delicious combination of toor dal, Pearl onions and a traditional sambar masala. Serve the Vengaya Sambar along with Steamed Rice and Thoran for a south indian lunch or dinner.

- Take 150 gm Toor dal
- Prepare 100 gm Small onions
- Get 3 Tomatoes
- Get 2 tsp Sambar powder
- Make ready 1/2 lemon size Tamarind
- Get As needed Salt
- Prepare As needed Oil
- Get 1 tsp Cumin
- Take 1 tsp Fenugreek seeds
- Prepare 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
- Get 1 string Curry leaves
- Get 1/2 tsp Hing
- Make ready As needed Coriander leaves

We use only shallots / small onions / pearl onions, which lends such an awesome taste and flavour to the sambar. Onion Sambar / Vengaya Sambar is one of the most popular sambar variety in Tamil Nadu.
Steps to make Onion Sambar:
- Soak tamarind in warm water for 15 minutes. Squeeze the juice and keep aside.
- With dal add Cumin, Fenugreek seeds, Hing. Cook this in pressure cooker until done.
- In kadai add oil once hot add Mustard seeds, Curry leaves. Once tempered add onion and saute until half done. Now add tomatoes and tamarind water. Add sambar powder and salt. Let it boil for 5 minutes in medium flame.
- Now add cooked dal and let it cook for another 7 minutes in low flame. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice and ghee.
We use only shallots / small onions / pearl onions, which lends such an awesome taste and flavour to the sambar. Onion Sambar / Vengaya Sambar is one of the most popular sambar variety in Tamil Nadu. As it's name suggests, the key ingredient of this sambar is Shallots (small onion). It's made using the freshly ground sambar masala (arachuvitta masala). The addition of shallots gives an excellent flavor and taste.
