The ingredients needed to make Mochi:
  1. Prepare 2 cups Water
  2. Prepare 2 cups Mochiko
  3. Take 1 cup Sugar

  1. Sift sweet rice flour (Mochiko) into a bowl.
  2. Mix in the sugar, then the water.
  3. If you wish to add food coloring, do so now.
  4. Steam mixture in a steamer or microwave.
  5. In steamer: Pour mixture into an oiled bowl. Steam for about 45 minutes until dough is gummy.
  6. In microwave: Pour mixture into an oiled bowl and cover. Microwave for 15 minutes.
  7. Once dough is ready, dust a board and your hands with the extra sweet rice flour and knead the dough until it has a smooth texture.
  8. Shape the dough into individual balls for use or flatten the balls and use them to cover a filling, if you like.
  9. I used raspberries in mine but you can use what you wish.

It can also be made from steamed brown rice. Alone, mochi is a staple food in Japanese cuisine, but it also acts as an important ingredient in many Japanese foods such as desserts, soups (both savory and dessert types), and hot pot dishes. It is made with a sweet, glutinous rice flour and often additional ingredients like cornstarch, water, and sugar (sometimes powdered sugar). When this mixture is heated and cooked, it forms a sticky dough. Mochi ice cream is a popular dessert.
